Branch Meeting – The Black Forest Café – Tuesday, January 15, 2019

The Southern New Hampshire Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) will hold their Winter Meeting at The Black Forest Cafe, 212 Route 101, Amherst on Tuesday, January 15, at 5:15 p.m. The evening will begin with a social time. Each person may order from the regular dinner menu with separate checks. The meeting will open at 6:15 p.m. The program will start about 6:45 p.m. The evening will end at about 8 p.m. when the restaurant closes. Please email or phone Susan Hoover with your reservation by January 8. susnhoover@aol.com, or 213-6601.
The evening program will focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) and include a general introduction on the history, meaning, and its significance to women entering the work force. STEAM is of particular interest to AAUW because women are underrepresented in these high-paying jobs.  The presenter will be the branch program coordinator, Pauline Landrigan, who will then facilitate a discussion to follow.
CLOSING THE GENDER PAY GAP

With an interest in closing the difference in gender pay gap, AAUW has recently introduced Work Smart Online – a free salary negotiation course to help women earn the pay they deserve. To access the online course type salary.aauw.com in your search bar and begin your preparation to negotiate a better salary and benefits. This easy, engaging e-tool will teach participants to learn the market value of their skills and experience, determine an equitable “target salary” based on skills and experience, and ask for the pay they deserve. Surveys of participants shows the program works with nearly all reporting having more confidence and better negotiating skills after taking the class.

AAUW’s mission is to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy. The Southern New Hampshire Branch provides scholarships for young women who are pursuing college degrees with the intent to follow STEAM careers after graduation. In addition, the branch also hosts a book discussion group and Meet and Eat social evenings. In early February 2019, for the seventh consecutive year, they will sponsor the annual Candidates Night giving the public a chance to meet and hear the positions of candidates running for offices on the Amherst ballot in March.

Members of the branch live in southeastern NH including the following communities: Amherst, Bedford, Dover, Exeter, Hanover, Manchester, Merrimack, Milford, Mont Vernon, Nashua, and Wilton.
AAUW is a non-partisan, fact-based organization advocating for all women to achieve economic self-sufficiency. For more information contact Susan Hoover.
