The first book written and published by an African American woman, Harriet Wilson (1825-1900). Her novel, “Our Nig, or Sketches From the Life of a Free Black”, considered autobiographical, was published anonymously in Boston in 1859. Though free she was treated very poorly while living and working as a servant for a family in Milford.
